WELCOME TO NORTHERN
RHODE ISLAND FOREST SCHOOL

We offer inclusive learning programs that value people's innate creativity and individuality. Through place-based education, experiential learning, and immersion in nature, learners develop socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. By connecting with nature and each other in all seasons, learners tap into their curiosity, build self-confidence, and become responsible stewards in their community.

WILD CHILD LITERACY

Currently Offered at OCYL in Cumberland

Does your child like to keep on the move and to be outside? Wild Child Literacy, an adult/child experiential learning class is held outdoors rain or shine! Each class includes a guided read-aloud of a children's book led by Lindsey Baillargeron, a literacy and language teacher, with a sensory, play-based activity that reinforces the vocabulary and STEM concepts in the book. Children will see how literacy and the outdoors go, quite literally, hand-in-hand. Each child will make a nature-based craft each week. Parent/guardian is required to attend with their child.

FOREST SCHOOL

Coming in Spring 2023!

The particular activities at a Forest School are unique to each program's location and the participants' ages and interests. However, there are a few common threads that help define our Forest School program:

  • It takes place entirely outside, all year round, in all weather (except for dangerous weather).

  • It supports the holistic development and needs of the participants.

  • It's learner-led and includes time for free exploration and play.

  • It involves regular and frequent visits, preferably to the same area with the same group.

  • It promotes appropriate levels of risk-taking, like climbing trees, using tools, and fire-lighting (where permitted).
